Litchfield National Park

Just one and a half hours' drive from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory, Litchfield National Park is an easy day trip. If you're feeling more adventurous, why not stay for a couple of days? The small town of Batchelor, located just near the Park's entrance, has budget accommodation and caravan parks ideal for camping.

There is much for visitors to see in the Litchfield National Park, since it covers 1,500 square kilometres and contains many interesting local habitats - including lush monsoon forests, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades, and magnetic termite mounds.

The park encloses a great deal of the spectacular Tabletop Range which is a wide sandstone plateau, mostly surrounded by magnificent cliffs. From October to May, during the monsoon season, four major waterfalls thunder down from cliffs to tropical rock pools below. Throughout the remainder of the year, these waterfalls are usually gentler, which makes them an ideal spot for a relaxing swim.

While in Litchfield, try a wildlife cruise along the stunning Reynolds River. The park has sealed roads throughout, which easily link all the major attractions and means anyone can visit and enjoy the wonderful surrounds.

The township of Adelaide River is also close by and offers a variety of accommodation options including camping sites, caravan parks, bed and breakfasts and farm stays. While here, take in the beautifully landscaped War Cemetery, which is the resting place for 63 civilians and 434 service men and women killed in the Top End during World War II.
